Showing the Bonesetters the Shirati KMT Hospital
After months of interviews and group discussions with a total of 41 traditional bonesetters, the three most suitable bonesetters were selected as partners for our pilot collaboration. All three have demonstrated that they work according to basic surgical principles: reposition, fixation, massage and exercise. We’re excited to announce our collaboration with:

Mzee Marando from Bubombi

Samwel Joash Masambuko from Randa

Mzee Obuya from Gabimori
Yesterday, they were formally welcomed by dr. Chirangi in his office, before receiving a tour of the hospital grounds. For all of them, it was the first time being shown an actual X-ray machine, or to enter surgical theater. After this, a meeting with 4 doctors, and the heads of nursing, theater and anaesthesia was held, to get acquainted, reiterate the study protocol, and provide an opportunity to ask eachother questions. I’m relieved to say, the atmosphere was very open and respectful. The medical doctors got to ask some critical questions, which were well received without hostility.
The plan for the next few months, awaiting ethical clearance, for Jovine to do weekly visits to our partner bonesetters, bringing the clinicians one by one, to show them actual traditional bonesetting and create mutual understanding.
